BIRTHDAY FREEBIES 2026
Starbucks · Sephora · Ulta · Target
Last checked: October 10, 2026. Your birthday can unlock useful U.S. loyalty rewards—but a ‘free birthday gift’ headline does not always mean zero spending. Starbucks, Sephora, Ulta Beauty and Target each have different enrollment, purchase and redemption rules. This guide uses their published program terms to help you plan without wasting a trip or making a purchase you did not want.
Birthday reward comparison: which is really free?
| Program | What you may receive | Need to join first? | Purchase requirement / timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starbucks Rewards | An eligible birthday drink or food item | Yes; at least 7 days before birthday, birthday recorded, and a Star-earning purchase before birthday each year | A qualifying transaction beforehand; Green redeem on birthday only, Gold within 7 days, Reserve within 30 days |
| Sephora Beauty Insider | One eligible Beauty Insider birthday gift, while supplies last | Yes; active Beauty Insider account | No purchase for in-store redemption; online purchase requirements apply (generally $25 in merchandise) |
| Ulta Beauty Rewards | Birthday gift while supplies last; 2X points on qualifying birthday-month purchases | Yes; birthday and email/app access required for gift | No purchase in store; online redemptions require a qualifying purchase; bonus points require activation |
| Target Circle | Birthday reward advertised as 5% off a future eligible purchase | Yes; birthday entered in account | A discount on a purchase, not a no-purchase free item; official help says valid for 30 days |
1. Starbucks Rewards: understand the seven-day rule
Starbucks updated its U.S. Rewards terms effective March 10, 2026. Its birthday benefit is tied to your membership tier. To qualify, you must enter your birthday, join at least seven days before it, and make at least one Star-earning transaction before your birthday during each year.
Eligible members can redeem one participating-store handcrafted beverage, food item, or bottled ready-to-drink beverage, with restrictions. This is not a blanket promise of any item on the menu, and multi-serve products, merchandise and alcoholic drinks are excluded.
When can you redeem?
- Green members: on the birthday itself only.
- Gold members: seven days beginning on the birthday.
- Reserve members: thirty days beginning on the birthday.
Check the Starbucks app for the actual reward and current member level, then scan your account barcode at a participating location. Read the official Starbucks Rewards terms.

2. Sephora Beauty Insider: in-store versus online matters
Sephora’s free Beauty Insider program offers an annual birthday gift subject to membership eligibility and inventory. Sephora’s official member FAQ says in-store birthday gifts do not require a merchandise purchase, while online redemption requires an eligible purchase; Sephora’s published terms generally specify a $25 merchandise minimum for Sephora.com birthday redemption. A gift may not be available in every store, and some options vary by membership tier.
- Sign in to your Beauty Insider account and view your current gift choices.
- For an in-store visit, confirm available inventory; show your registered membership information to redeem.
- For an online order, check the merchandise minimum and eligible shopping cart; tax, shipping and some excluded items do not meet the threshold.
- If you were not planning to buy anything, compare the value of a free in-store gift with the cost of travel rather than purchasing an unnecessary online order.

3. Ulta Beauty Rewards: gift, bonus points and tier perks are different
Ulta Beauty Rewards members can receive a birthday gift during their birthday month, subject to availability. Ulta’s current birthday reward page says your birthday must be entered in your profile and you must opt in to marketing communications before your birthday month to qualify; a valid email or the Ulta app is also important for receiving or accessing the in-store gift coupon. Ulta also offers 2X points on qualifying birthday-month purchases, but the points offer requires activation.
Ulta’s current published terms say no purchase is needed to redeem a qualifying birthday gift in store. Online and pickup redemption follow different rules: online checkout and pickup require a qualifying merchandise purchase, plus any specific coupon conditions. Platinum and Diamond members may have an additional birthday benefit.
- Before your birthday month, check that your date of birth is correctly listed in your Ulta account.
- Confirm gift inventory and the redemption window in the app or current birthday coupon.
- For a no-purchase in-store birthday gift, show the valid gift coupon code in your birthday email or Ulta app and confirm inventory first. The online gift instead requires a qualifying merchandise purchase greater than $0; online checkout generally applies the gift without a separate birthday coupon code.
- If buying online, review minimum-purchase and shipping requirements rather than assuming the birthday item ships alone for free.

4. Target Circle: a useful birthday discount, not a free birthday product
Target’s official help describes a 5% birthday discount on an eligible future purchase for a member who has included their birth date. Its help page states that the reward is valid for 30 days. Restrictions apply, and the actual reward details and expiration appear in your account Wallet or Target Circle dashboard.
This is different from a free birthday item. Example only: if an eligible pre-tax purchase is $80 and a 5% birthday offer applies without exclusions, the discount would be $4. This is an illustrative calculation, not confirmation that any particular product or order qualifies.
- Join free Target Circle if you want to use its loyalty benefits.
- Add your birthday information in your Target account.
- Check the actual birthday reward in your Wallet or Target.com dashboard.
- Confirm eligible items, store availability, restrictions and total price before buying.

A no-waste birthday checklist
To decide whether a reward is worthwhile, use the Deal Reality Check to compare purchase minimums, dates and the actual value you can redeem, rather than counting points as instant cash.
- Add your real birth month/day only to official loyalty accounts that you genuinely intend to use.
- Sign up early enough to satisfy enrollment rules and check opt-in requirements.
- Watch for official app or email confirmation; do not rely on screenshots of someone else’s coupon.
- Read whether the reward works online, in store or both.
- Review purchase minimums, redemption dates and available inventory.
- If a reward requires spending money, evaluate whether you would have made that purchase anyway.
Frequently asked questions
Are all four birthday programs free to join?
These programs describe a free basic membership option. That does not mean every reward can be claimed without a purchase or qualifying prior account activity.
Do I have to claim every birthday reward on my birthday?
No. Starbucks redemption depends on membership tier; Sephora and Ulta generally use birthday-month benefits; Target says its birthday reward is valid for 30 days. Check the exact current terms in your own account.
Can I use someone else’s birthday code?
Do not assume rewards transfer. Most loyalty offers are account-specific, and program rules may restrict sharing or transferring them.
