Updated October 10, 2026. A discount badge does not prove you’re saving money. Use this practical U.S. consumer toolkit to check the real total cost, personal eligibility, dates, official provider and return conditions before committing to a deal.

Happy Perks Calendar is independent; we do not issue coupons, approve government rebates, book travel or guarantee benefits. This guide gives you an original, reusable decision process you can use across stores, hotels, reward programs and local assistance offers.

Six questions to ask before you buy

CheckYour questionWarning sign
1. Official sourceIs this an actual retailer, service provider or government program?A copied logo or social-media screenshot is the only proof
2. EligibilityDo I qualify based on membership, location, age, purchase or income rules? The advertisement says everyone qualifies but official terms say otherwise
3. ValidityIs the offer active now, with an exact end date and local time zone?Last year’s promotion presented as today’s deal
4. Final priceWhat will I truly pay after mandatory fees, tax and shipping?Only a percentage headline with no real comparable price
5. RedemptionIs a coupon, app, eligible payment method or preapproval required? The deal demands an unexpected upfront fee or secret code
6. Exits and limitsCan I cancel or return it? Are there quantity, inventory or blackout restrictions?Nonrefundable terms hidden until checkout

Choose your benefit type

Open only the type that fits your situation. Each checklist works without a special account, browser extension or additional app.

Shopping discounts and coupons

A clothing, electronics or department-store ‘50% OFF’ banner can be misleading if the original price was unrealistic or the eligible item is different. Compare like with like.

  • Confirm the exact SKU or item model, size, condition, seller and warranty.
  • Record a baseline comparable price before applying promotional claims.
  • Compare final cost including shipping, applicable taxes and membership charges.
  • Check exclusions, code stacking, gift-card conditions and return deadlines.
Flights, hotels and vacation packages

A cheap nightly hotel headline may lose after fees or nonrefundable terms. U.S. Department of Transportation airline booking protections have conditions and do not automatically apply to agency bookings.

  • Compare the same dates, number of guests, airports, room types and included services.
  • Check mandatory lodging fees as part of the displayed total, plus relevant taxes and optional extras.
  • Check whether booking is directly with an airline/hotel or through a travel agency.
  • Read the actual cancellation or refund policy before payment.
Rewards, birthday perks and loyalty points

A future loyalty reward is not cash in your bank account. Its true value depends on whether and when you can redeem it.

  • Confirm whether you need to join before the birthday, promotion or shopping date.
  • Check whether a prior purchase, qualifying product or paid membership is required.
  • Separate an instant checkout discount from points that can only be redeemed later.
  • Look for expiration dates, gift inventory restrictions and per-account limits.
Government programs, rebates and assistance

Not every public benefit is a ‘voucher’. Local availability, eligibility and application procedures determine what someone can receive.

  • Start with the program’s official government or authorized administrator site.
  • Check that the program is actually open for your state, ZIP code or household.
  • Confirm income, property, residency or preapproval rules before buying.
  • Never pay strangers to unlock a supposed guaranteed government payment.

The real savings formula

Comparable savings = genuine cost of the same eligible option − final all-in cost of the proposed deal. If the difference is negative, the advertised ‘deal’ is more expensive than the comparison. If the product, refundability, warranty or service differs, the offers are not directly comparable.

Illustrative optionProduct / room base costFees and shippingTotal amount paid
Normal eligible option$120$0$120
Advertised ‘deal’$99$27$126
Difference——Deal costs $6 more

Illustrative arithmetic only — these are not live prices. In the example above, the advertised option costs $126 rather than the comparable $120; its apparent price cut does not create a saving.

Make sure the offer is current

Editorial labelWhat we meanWhat to do
Confirmed offerAn official source provides terms and a current validity windowStill check your exact product, location and eligibility
Upcoming announcementAn official provider announced a future offer with relevant conditionsWait for the scheduled start and verify current availability
Seasonal expectationA familiar shopping period or annual pattern, without a confirmed provider offerDo not budget around an assumed discount
ExpiredA confirmed offer’s date passed or the program was withdrawnDo not treat it as active; find current terms
UnverifiedNo reliable primary-source evidence supports the claimDo not submit payment or personal information based on it

A 90-second pre-checkout routine

  • Open the official provider site directly, not through a surprising advertisement or copied coupon image.
  • Find the current terms for the exact offer and write down its end date.
  • Check your own eligibility and any sign-up / verification requirements.
  • Compare truly matching products or travel options.
  • Calculate what you will actually pay after the charges relevant to you.
  • Confirm refunds, cancellation, warranties and other important limitations.
  • If something looks wrong, postpone the purchase and verify it using the provider’s official support channel.

Two common red flags

A guaranteed rebate that requires a processing payment

Scammers may impersonate real agencies. Official benefits are subject to rules; do not send a processing payment, identity document or banking credential to an unsolicited link. Learn about government grant scams from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.

A hotel or airline price that hides the real commitment

Compare the actual merchant and full relevant price. Refer to the FTC’s short-term lodging pricing guidance and the U.S. DOT airline refund guidance. Not every travel booking is cancelable without cost.
