3 essential checks at a glance

1. SAME PRODUCT?

Check the identical model, size, color and product condition.

2. ELIGIBLE SELLER?

Review which retailers and websites the current policy permits.

3. TRUE SAVINGS?

Check shipping, promotions, exclusions and the return window.

Reviewed October 11, 2026. A price-match policy can help shoppers avoid paying more than necessary for the same eligible item. But Target, Best Buy and Walmart have different rules, and none promises to match every competitor or every Black Friday promotion. Here is an independent practical comparison based on official 2026 store policies—not a list of unverified coupons.

Target vs Best Buy vs Walmart: the rules

StoreWhat can be matchedAfter purchase?Major exclusion
TargetQualifying item at lower current Target.com, Target store, or eligible automatic Target Circle dealUp to 14 days on eligible Target purchasesGenerally not a different Target store for a store purchase; no third-party price matches
Best BuyIdentical new product at qualified online or local competitor, when immediately availableBest Buy’s own lower price during the return/exchange period, subject to rulesMarketplace sellers, special promotions and Thanksgiving holiday-window deals excluded
Walmart U.S. storeIdentical item sold and stocked on Walmart.com at the time of in-store checkoutDo not assume post-purchase adjustmentsNot competitor prices, Walmart Marketplace sellers, Rollbacks or Black Friday promotions
Walmart.com orderNo competitor or later price matching under published policyGenerally no subsequent lower-price matchWalmart store offers and other seller listings do not count

1. Target: the 14-day window matters

Target’s official Price Match Guarantee allows eligible customers to request a lower current Target price at checkout or within 14 days of purchase. Its policy focuses on the identical item and current eligible prices within the Target ecosystem rather than a competing retailer. Product name, model, size, quantity and color must match.

A store purchase does not qualify simply because another Target location displays a lower in-store price. Screenshots are not accepted as proof: Target staff verify the live price, and a prior purchase usually requires a receipt, digital proof or packing slip.

  • Look up the exact product in Target.com or its app.
  • Confirm the applicable store location on the app.
  • Bring the current offer to Guest Services, or use Target’s online support for online orders.
  • Check coupons, clearance, gift-card promotions and marketplace restrictions.
  • Ask for a price match during the eligible 14-day period, not after it expires.

2. Best Buy: eligible competitors—not every website

Best Buy’s updated price-match policy effective September 2, 2026 covers identical qualifying new products at Best Buy and qualified competitors. Matching brand, model number, color, availability and pricing eligibility matter. A random marketplace seller or an open-box product generally does not qualify.

Best Buy excludes special daily deals, qualifying-competitor pricing during the Thanksgiving Thursday-through-Monday period, and other promotional forms. It can also match its own lower price during the applicable return/exchange period, subject to terms. The return period can differ by account and purchase, so do not assume one universal number of days.

  • Confirm the exact model number and that both sellers offer the new product.
  • Verify the competing retailer is on Best Buy’s list of qualified competitors.
  • Check availability for immediate shipping or pickup.
  • Ask staff in the store or use Best Buy’s chat/phone channels for online orders.
  • Keep the receipt and review the stated return-and-exchange period.

3. Walmart: understand the store-only comparison

Walmart’s U.S. price-match policy allows a customer shopping in a Walmart store to request matching an identical qualifying item listed as available and in stock from Walmart.com at checkout. The store manager may make the final eligibility decision. This does not mean Walmart matches Amazon, Target, Best Buy or another Walmart store.

Walmart also excludes Walmart.com third-party sellers, special promotional listings, Rollbacks, clearance and Black Friday/Cyber Monday events. Walmart.com says it does not retrospectively match a lower price after an online purchase.

4. What a price-match calculation really saves

Illustrative offerPre-tax priceOther relevant costEffective checkout total
Product at store A$189$0$189
Identical matched item at store B$179$8 shipping$187
Nonmatching refurbished item$149Different conditionNot a valid like-for-like comparison

Illustrative numbers only. The cheaper sticker price is not automatically a stronger purchase when warranty, condition, shipping, taxes, returns or store membership rules differ.

5. A practical seven-step price-match checklist

  • Keep the original receipt or digital order number.
  • Compare the identical brand, size, storage configuration, model number and color.
  • Check that the lower price is currently live—not a screenshot or expired promotion.
  • Check who actually sells the item: the retailer or a marketplace seller.
  • Confirm stock and pickup/shipping availability under the chosen store’s rules.
  • Read the specific store’s exclusion list and any current special holiday blackout.
  • Request the adjustment through the correct channel and save the result.

6. What happens around Black Friday 2026?

A store’s 2026 price-match rules may exclude selected Black Friday, Cyber Monday and limited-time promotions. Best Buy’s September 2026 policy specifically excludes defined competitor holiday-window prices; Walmart also excludes specified promotional categories. Never promise that a shopping event price can be matched. Compare real checkout totals instead of planning around an assumed adjustment.

Common questions

Will Target match an Amazon price? Its current published program concerns eligible Target prices rather than competitor prices. Will Best Buy match any Amazon seller? No; qualified competitor and first-party/marketplace restrictions apply. Will Walmart adjust my online purchase after a price drop?
