USPS FREE SERVICES
MAIL PREVIEW + PACKAGE PICKUP
Last checked October 11, 2026. Two real U.S. Postal Service tools can save you time without adding a recurring subscription: USPS Informed Delivery provides eligible customers with a free incoming-mail preview, while USPS Package Pickup can collect eligible prepaid packages during regular mail delivery without a pickup fee. These are different services with different eligibility and limitations.
Neither benefit creates free postage or guarantees delivery. A mail-preview image may not appear for every piece of mail, and not every address or package qualifies. This guide explains where to check, what costs $0, and when a paid service may still apply.
Compare two useful USPS services
| USPS feature | Core use | Price | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Informed Delivery | Digital preview of incoming letter-sized mail and package-status information | Free for eligible customers | Address and identity verification required; not all mail scanned |
| Package Pickup | Carrier collects eligible prepaid outbound or return packages during regular delivery | $0 pickup fee when eligible | Postage or valid prepaid return label still required |
| Pickup on Demand | Schedule pickup for a particular paid service window | Additional fee | Different from the no-fee pickup during regular delivery |
1. Informed Delivery: what you actually see
USPS’s official Informed Delivery page explains that the service displays grayscale images of the outside address side of eligible incoming letter-sized envelopes. It does not scan or reveal the contents of sealed letters. You may receive a daily digest email or view a dashboard, plus available package tracking information.
The preview is not a guarantee that a particular letter will arrive that same day. Not every piece of mail is processed through the imaging equipment, some mail types are excluded, and actual delivery conditions vary.
2. How to enroll without a subscription fee
- Begin at the official USPS Informed Delivery page, not a lookalike tracking ad.
- Check your ZIP code and the exact address for service availability.
- Create or sign in to your USPS.com account.
- Complete USPS identity verification and address confirmation.
- Opt in to notifications, then check the dashboard or daily digest.
USPS says certain apartment and condominium addresses may be ineligible if they lack a uniquely coded mailbox. Business addresses and PO Boxes have account-specific enrollment rules. If remote identity verification fails, follow USPS’s official alternative verification instructions.

3. Free Package Pickup: it means free collection, not shipping
Under the USPS Package Pickup rules, eligible prepaid shipments can be picked up by your letter carrier during normal delivery. Supported categories include Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, USPS Ground Advantage and eligible returns, under the current service requirements. The pickup itself can be free, but the package still needs prepaid postage or an eligible return label.
A pickup at a special time may instead fall under the paid Pickup on Demand service. USPS’s scheduling interface displays the service and applicable pickup fee before confirmation.
4. Schedule a pickup correctly
- Prepare an eligible package and purchase postage or obtain the merchant’s legitimate prepaid return label.
- Go directly to USPS Schedule a Pickup.
- Enter a pickup address and the safe, accessible location where the parcel will wait.
- Choose pickup during regular mail delivery if you want to request the no-fee option.
- Select the shipment category and quantity, then review USPS eligibility and charges.
- Save the confirmation and check tracking after the carrier scans your parcel.
Don’t leave a valuable parcel unsecured if the pickup location is not safe. The pickup request does not necessarily mean the carrier has already accepted or scanned the package.
5. Which service will save you time?
| Typical situation | Useful tool | Main benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Waiting for an important paper letter | Informed Delivery | Awareness of incoming mail imagery when available |
| Tracking a household’s USPS packages | Informed Delivery | Delivery-status visibility for supported shipments |
| Returning an online shopping item with a prepaid USPS label | Package Pickup | Potentially avoid traveling to a postal counter |
| Need a guaranteed pickup at a particular time | Check Pickup on Demand | Convenience may carry an extra fee |
6. Avoid fake delivery-message fees
Scammers impersonate USPS in text messages that say an address is incomplete or a package needs a tiny redelivery payment. Do not provide payment-card or identity information through an unexpected text link. Open the official USPS site or your known USPS account and enter your authentic tracking number there. USPS Informed Delivery enrollment itself is free.
- Check the full domain and never trust a shortened link by itself.
- Avoid buying a paid ‘mail preview membership’ from a third party.
- Understand that text alerts, package tracking and mail images can contain limitations.
- Keep your account password and verification codes private.
- Report suspicious messages using USPS’s published fraud and postal inspection resources.

7. Five-minute family setup
Have a household member check whether the residential address is eligible for Informed Delivery; choose the appropriate personal account and verify identity. For returns, check the merchant’s label before scheduling a free carrier pickup. This can simplify errands, but does not change normal postage requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Is Informed Delivery always free? USPS describes it as free for eligible addresses. Does it photograph letters inside? No, it images the exterior of supported mail. Does free pickup mean free shipping? No, qualifying prepaid postage or a return label is still needed. Can I choose a custom time free? A timed Pickup on Demand option carries a separate fee.
