Last checked: October 11, 2026. A family train trip can be both fun and cost-conscious—but you cannot apply the same Amtrak discount to every passenger. Children, infants, seniors, students, veterans and military families have different eligibility rules, and a discounted fare does not necessarily beat another available promotion. This independent guide explains the booking choices that matter before you pay.

On This Page — FIND YOUR RAIL DISCOUNT

In one minute: Amtrak’s nationwide standard offers include 50% off the base rail fare for children ages 2–12 accompanied by an adult, one free lap infant under two per paying adult, 10% off most eligible senior fares starting at age 65, a 15% student program for ages 17–24 with one-day advance booking and route exclusions, and 10% discounts for qualifying active-duty military or veterans. Always check the actual route and traveler selector. Amtrak’s official everyday offers list the programs.

1. Family tickets: when is a child exactly half price?

Under Amtrak’s official child discount, a passenger ages 2–12 receives 50% off the applicable standard adult rail base fare when an adult aged 18 or older travels in the same reservation. The passenger’s age when the itinerary begins determines which fare is applied to the full trip. Children ages 12 or younger ordinarily may not travel alone; older unaccompanied minors are subject to separate rules.

For infants younger than two, one infant may ride free on the lap of each adult paying an adult fare. If the infant needs an individual coach seat, a child fare applies; additional infants per adult also use the child fare. The free lap infant does not mean free sleeping-room accommodation, food or another ticket upgrade.

  • In Amtrak’s booking form, add every adult, child and infant with the correct traveler category.
  • Check the adult companion and child appear together in the same reservation.
  • Confirm the discount changes the actual rail fare before checkout.
  • If you need a separate seat for an infant or an accessible accommodation, confirm the appropriate paid conditions.
  • Bring documents demonstrating age if requested.

2. Seniors: the 65+ rule and the cross-border exception

Amtrak’s senior discount page says travelers aged 65 or older can save 10% on most trains. On certain Amtrak–VIA Rail Canada cross-border services, the listed senior eligibility age is 60. These two age cutoffs should not be confused.

The senior discount does not apply to sleeper accommodation charges and may exclude certain connecting services. It generally cannot be stacked freely with unrelated promo offers. Choose Senior as a traveler type where available, then compare the fare against other offers for that exact trip.

3. Student fares: national V814 is not a universal student pass

The current national student offer gives eligible students ages 17–24 15% off the regular adult rail fare with a valid student ID. It requires booking at least one day in advance; the discount may apply automatically when selecting eligible travel, or app users may enter V814. Coach and Acela Business Class are listed as eligible where other conditions are met.

The national deal explicitly excludes several routes, including selected Midwestern and California services. This is important because Amtrak Midwest has a separate student program covering students ages 13–25 on participating routes, with its own code V307. Do not assume the national V814 eligibility, code or advance-purchase rule applies unchanged to Midwest trains.

4. Active military, veterans and families: check the exact traveler category

Amtrak’s everyday discount list includes 10% savings for qualifying active-duty U.S. service members, their spouses and eligible dependents, and qualifying military veterans. Proof of qualifying status can be requested, and fare limitations apply. Different California routes may publish additional regional promotions, so check the actual trip.

Do not select another passenger’s verified benefit category merely to lower the fare. The program discount may be limited to the eligible rail fare and may not combine with other advertised sale offers, upgrades or sleeper accommodation costs.

5. Price the whole trip: an original family fare example

Assume a hypothetical one-way coach trip where the adult base fare is $100 and two children, ages six and nine, each qualify for 50% off. With two adults, the illustrative base rail total is $100 + $100 + $50 + $50 = $300, rather than four adult fares totaling $400. The hypothetical $100 difference does not include upgrades, connecting transport, cancellations or other costs. This is not a live Amtrak quote.

Illustrative passengerWithout child categoryWith child discount
Adult 1$100$100
Adult 2$100$100
Child age 6$100$50
Child age 9$100$50
Total base fare$400$300

For seniors or students, calculate the discounted price only against an eligible underlying fare. A $100 full fare with a hypothetical 10% senior discount becomes $90, but a separate publicly available $80 sale could still cost less. Never claim one program always wins.

6. Compare train fares without losing the benefit

  • Enter exact stations and dates rather than comparing two different travel times.
  • Select ages and military/senior/student categories honestly.
  • Check whether your route appears on the program eligibility or exclusion list.
  • Compare the eligible offer with the current public fare and any regional promotion; discounts may not combine.
  • Review the fare’s cancellation, refund and change conditions before payment.
  • Check additional costs for sleeper rooms, onboard meals, ground transportation and baggage items outside standard allowance.
  • Save fare conditions and booking confirmation for later changes.

7. When Amtrak savings do not apply

Amtrak’s promotions can have limited inventory, blackouts, route exceptions, fare-type restrictions and nonstacking rules. Discounts on a base rail fare do not make a sleeper cabin 50% cheaper. Similarly, a discounted student ticket is not valid on every regional route and may need advance purchase. An offer’s appearance on an Amtrak help page does not confirm seats on a particular date.

If your trip is near a major holiday, plan ahead and check the final fare before scheduling hotels or attractions. For city breaks, some routes arrive downtown and may reduce ground-transport expenses, but the real savings depend on your actual starting point, luggage and itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 12-year-old pay half-price on Amtrak?

Under Amtrak’s child fare, children ages 2–12 can qualify for 50% off the standard adult base rail fare while accompanied by an adult 18 or older in the same reservation, subject to exclusions.

Can I bring two infants free with one paying adult?

No. The published policy provides one free lap infant younger than two per paying adult. The additional infant generally travels at the child fare.

Can all students use 15% off with V814?

No. The national code is for eligible students ages 17–24, qualifying routes and approved fare classes, with at least one-day advance purchase. Regional deals like Midwest V307 have different rules.

Does a senior discount pay for a private sleeper?

No. Amtrak says senior discounts do not reduce sleeping accommodation charges.

Can military discount and an online sale stack?

Do not assume they can; Amtrak lists non-combination and fare-specific restrictions. Compare the actual checkout alternatives.
